NEW POTENTIAL PROJECT - Rotary
Club of Patong Beach Tsunami Relief
Date of Trip: 16-17 July 2005
Trip location: Hin Lot Fish Traps, Kuraburi
Name of Rotarian: Bradley Kenny
It was brought to my attention that some fishermen had not been compensated fully for their losses in what is called the Hin Lot Pier area of Kuraburi. This are is close to where we are assisting Khun Dim with her son Kringkri (the boy with Cerebral Palsy).
I interviewed 24 fisherman families and collected information and photos on their losses. Many of their houses were damaged and some loss of life took place in Hin Lot, however, they were spared the brunt of the force of the Tsunami waves due to being in a thick Mangrove area which absorbed most of the force.
From the government Baht 18,000 each family got they repaired their houses and boats, and purchased some new fishing gear, however, they did not have enough money to replace all and are asking for Baht 8,000 per family for fish traps. I thought it was admirable that they were only asking for replacement fish traps and even so, they will buy the needed materials and make their own fish traps.
