The Ko Sirae Home for Mothers and Children

The Life Home Project Foundation

The Life Home Project Foundation (LHPF) is a local NGO based in Phuket, Thailand, that works primarily with
HIV positive mothers and their children (who may or may not be infected). We also work with sea-gypsy  and slum children, mostly trough scholarships.

As  we believe that because of the tsunami disaster in southern Thailand will increase dramatically the levelsof poverty, and thou the problems associated with it, we have decided to open our home also to childrenaffected by the situation, non necessarily directly affected by the HIV epidemic.

LHPF is a non-denominational, charitable organization. Our funding is provided by privatedonations and grants from organizations that are committed to the welfare and developmentof women and children.  Our accountancy is open and public.

LHPF has two rented houses in Phuket where we provide with accommodation and food for HIV positive mothers and children. But the most important, we teach them skills and provide themwith jobs , so they can be self sufficient. Is our philosophy to help them to help themselves.

The Ko Sirae Home for Mothers and Children

As the capacity in our homes arrived this last year to it's maximum occupancy, we decided to begin the processto build a new larger facility, more adapted to the needs of mothers and children and with the possibility to sheltermany more cases. The capacity will be around 100 people between children and adults.

The land has been already purchased, 4 rais, 10 minutes drive from Phuket Town, what offer an easy accessto the people who benefit from the project.

The projects avoids the overcrowding of a big facility, with small units that have different uses: Kitchen and dinning room, services areas, home  and school for children, home units for groups of mothersand their children, art workshop, etc. This approach offers several advantages:

Let us avoid the problems of a big community sharing services in the same area, is a more human scale project, similar to the life at the villages where most of the affected women came from.
And it allows to cut the maintenance cost, as each group of women take care of their own house.

The buildings are based on Thai traditional designs, but using actual materials in order to minimize the running cost. Materials used are environmental friendly.

We have already the plans an we will begin to build in April 2005, expecting to finish it and be ready in November 2005.

The designs are preliminary drawings, that can be changed to adapt them to the needs or be more efficient.

The meters of the different units has been updated to be able to give shelter to tsunami affected children, directly or indirectly.

Education and Vocational training

We would like to offer vocational training to girls between 16 and 18 years old, specially from the Sea Gypsycommunity.

This program will complement the vocational training of young HIV positive mothers that we havebeen doing for the last 3 years.

This group of girls is a very vulnerable segment, that in the case of beingunable to get jobs in the hospitality industry, could be lured into prostitution.

Their parents don't encouragetheir daughters to continue their studies after the first cycle of secondary or even less. Pushed to find a jobwithout any qualification or skills, they are in danger of  getting involved into the sex industry or other illegalactivities, in their innocent will to help their families.

The training would cover skills training like :

Bakery
Basic English for hospitality
Handicrafts

It would be complemented with an apprentice program. In which the girls and young mothers would receive aminimum salary while working as apprentices.
