The members of the Rotary Club of Patong Beach thank the outgoing President Karen Eidsvik-Moody for her leadership this past Rotary year July 2018 to June 2019. President Karen was always present and spent countless hours to keep this Rotary club a vibrant one. Together with her husband Gary Eidsvik-Moody, who was serving as President-Elect and sadly passed away on January 10th. Together they were a perfect team and despite the huge loss Pres. Karen completed her rotary work in a fantastic way. During her year we switched back from a lunch meeting to dinner meetings. Under her leadership, we conducted several projects successfully and she hands over a healthy club to incoming President Jonathan Russell. President Karen will always be remembered as the first female President of the Rotary Club of Patong Beach. Thank you, President Karen, for a great Rotary year!

Thank you President Karen

Rawai Municipality ran a training event on Monday (June 10) to educate people about the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a motorbike as statistics show that only 18% of Phuket motorcyclists wear a helmet at all times, compared with the national average of 56%.
Rawai Mayor Aroon Solos presided over the event, held at Muang Phuket School just south of Chalong Circle in Rawai, which was the result of a joint effort by Rawai Municipality and three Rotary Clubs in Phuket: the Rotary Club of Andaman, the Rotary Club of Phuket and the Rotary Club of Patong Beach.

The Rotary Club Day on May 18th in Karon at our member Jaspal's Karon Sea & Sands hotel was a great success! Combing club business with fellowship turned out to be productive and entertaining. Starting with a 2 hour teambuilding we learned what a team cooperating well can achieve in a short while. Fantastic how fast we got a small bamboo instrument band together playing Jingle Bells.

Last Saturday night's Rotary White Charity Event at Outrigger Laguna was indeed magical -- a coincidence of all things that make a party wonderful and a Charity Gala successful. The evening began with a prismatic sunset, enjoyed beachside by the fifty charitable guests all dressed in White. As the stemware were drained, the sunset dimmed, and the music paused, all guests ambled into the elegant white dining room to enjoy many well presented pairings of superb food, high quality music and libations. -- and enjoy we did, beyond our dreams

Our Global Grant for the BanYa Learning Center is on its final approach. Ensuring the project is sustainable a thorough teacher's training program was set up by Dr Siriwan Kief and the first workshop for the teachers just took place. Professional Development Program is designed to support teacher change; include a focused, multiday session for teachers that takes place outside of the teacher’s classroom or school; and include follow-up opportunities over the school year. These experiences are provided by Phuket Rajabhat University (PKRU). The program uses Mentoring and Coaching Models as framework for 1 year to encourage 10 Burmese teachers developing and trying new strategies including and to determine what does and does not work by critically evaluating their own beliefs about teaching and learning. Peer coaching is built upon trusting relationships that develop between teachers. It is based on mutually working together to improve teaching skills in order to improve student learning

The new strategic plan is providing us with some dynamic discussion about the future of our club for the next few years and how we are best organised and ensure the full engagement of all our members. I am almost shivering with excitement. This is a major repositioning as we drive hard the motto "Service above Self" in a modern, relevant and aspirational way as we aim to lift our various communities of interests to a high level of personal achievement and recognition. I am proposing that all our various efforts in the area of young people be brought together in one overall co - ordinated plan which is developed and shared by our members,

BanYa has captured the imagination of many overseas Rotarians . Two local Rotarians Pat and Jim Domville became a aware of this project and convinced the Rotary Club of Patong Beach to become involved. Phuket is very dependent on Myanmar workers particularly in construction. They live in squalid camps and children have no access to Thai education unless they have passed Thai tests in the key curriculum areas. The children were left in the camp and become open to social disorder including theft and potential prostitution. Three years ago The Good Shepherd Order working with a group of volunteers began a program of providing food, education, security and some basic education (Maslow’s Hierarchies level1)This has shown a huge change over this time . The response shows what a community can do when it works together. Over the last three years this project has captured the imagination of many overseas Rotarians .In the last two years the center moved to a local small hotel and catered for 120 students supported by many volunteers. The project has moved again and into a new and exciting phase as it commences in a new rented building with 172 students. The new building of 8 classrooms a covered area, kitchen, toilets and a drinking water system. This is a great centre for learning.

"Water Safety and Learn to Swim." Shall we be involved? Lifeguards and water safety was the topic at our recent club meeting when J.P. Mestanza of the Phuket News indicated this was a big story. Meanwhile PP Larry had proposed that we look seriously at this issue. He stated :If you ask the average resident of Thailand “What is the leading cause of deaths in children over the age of one?” you would probable get a response, “motor bike accidents”.

The Kamala police and the Rotary Club of Patong Beach are about to embark on a campaign to make the area the best in Phuket for low levels casualties because students wear their helmets. We are all aware that it is one thing to provide a helmet but the next is ensure students wear them. This campaign with the strong support of the police aims at ensuring teachers at schools wear helmets, students are regularly checked and the police monitor the entrances to the local school. The campaign will also target local families, workers and the large number of foreign tourists who have a high level of accidents on motor bikes and scooters. It is hoped to sign a Memorandum of Agreement between the Kamala Police Directors of Schools and the Rotary Club of Patong Beach in which all parties commit to ensuring " Kids " wear helmets. Our Service projects committee visited both schools in the area to meet the Directors and activity organisers to secure their support Several meetings have taken place with Major Chayapou Phumaruemit and his team of officers from the Kamala police Station. They are enthusiastic in making Kamala the No 1 area for helmet safety. They regularly check helmet wearing at the gates of the school.

A “Ceremony of Celebration and Handover ” Friday November 17th 10.30 am at Ban SiamYen Municipal School Clean Drinking: Water and Sanitation 3,500 students have fresh water daily This RCoPB project caters for school within walking distance from Days Inn and lies within the responsibility of the Patong Council Phuket Thailand. The town which was severely affected by the tsunami has grown rapidly to cater for the tourism but the infrastructure has not been able to respond. Water and Waste management is the most important issue. The local river which discharges into the sea is full of toxins. The town supply is of poor quality and drinking water as such has to be purchased in 1 gallon plastic jars. The provision of the pure drinking water system is part of a more comprehensive plan on community health and well being. This project recognizes that water and sanitation is fundamental to community health through the provision of safe affordable water for personal and domestic use. There is a local concern that local toxins (including human waste) permeate the local water. The schools with poor sanitation and poor water supply are of high risk from infections and exposure to contaminants. This may well have a prejudicial impact on girls.

They are fisherman and have little support from government. The Mercy Centre provides accommodation so students can attend the local high school and technical college. Primary students live on the island and each day a teacher and cook visits by boat to provide education and a meal. This year the Rotary Club of Patong Beach is supporting 28 students at the centre at a cost of 204,000 Baht which is used for books, uniform and food.

Dr Vipawee from the Prince of Songkla University at a recent club meeting challenged our club to consider the issue of Toxins in the Klong and the impact it has on personal health and well-being and the tourist economy. Phuket has a total of about 16.63 square kilometers of coral reef cover. Coral reef areas close to the open sea are in good condition. However, on the west side from north of Karon up to Nai Yang Beach the coral is in decay, although there are some encouraging signs of restoration undertaken by local business. In east Phuket, where the sea grass bed and mangroves grow, there is still capacity to grow. The cleaning of sewage to a tertiary level so it can be used as graywater for irrigation is a worthy step if taken up by our resorts.

The RCoPB Club Assembly on Friday, 9 June was well attended by 16 members, who became 17 when new member Deb Mierczak became the second woman inducted in 2017-18. Twelve are required for a quorum at Club Assemblies. Larry Amsden led members through changes to the by-laws resulting from a review by himself, PP Sam and PP Denis. Changes approved were: - Confirmation of the change of date to a Friday at noon-1.30p for weekly meetings.
- 40% attendance, down from 60%, is now permitted, including makeups.
- A recommendation from the outgoing board not to include a new Article 11 in the revamped by-laws, to introduce corporate membership, was accepted.
- All other recommended changes to the by-laws were approved.
A big thank you to Larry, Sam and Denis for undertaking this important task.

Rotarians and children alike were not daunted by a massive power blackout when they gathered at Prince of Songkla University on Tuesday, 6 June for the formal presentation of water filters arising from the White Water Gala fund raiser earlier this year. The scene was set for around 300 people in a large lecture room at the University. The deputy governor had arrived, 300 filters had been assembled, many of them on the stage. School children, parents, friends, university staff and Rotarians were all set.

Friday April 21 the Safer Road Foundation which was supported by Rotary in this project, officially handed over the red-light cameras installed in Phuket. The main purpose of these cameras is to change bad driving behavior in Phuket and scare people into obeying traffic laws. This is one of the policies to propel Phuket toward Smart City status as well. These will prove to be very helpful and save a lot of time for police officers, said Governor Chokchai in February when the project was launched.

Phuket is very dependent on Myanmar workers particularly in construction. They live in squalid camps and children have no access to Thai education unless they have passed Thai tests in the key curriculum areas. Rotary became aware of the conditions when children are left in the camp and become open to social disorder. Three years ago Rotary joined The Good Shepherd Order who were working with a group of volunteers which began a program of providing food, education, security and some basic education.

Patong Hospital, the Rotary Club of Patong Beach (RCoPB) and the Newport Sunrise Rotary Club (of California, USA) from April 18 to 22 provided 400 Phuket children with free dental care. Newport Sunrise Rotary Club brought 50 qualified dentists and dental students, as part of the Ayuda Mission, who are a strategic partner in the club’s Bacchus Doc in a Box programme. The focus of the project was to bring together all the schools, kindergartens, child-care centres and special centres to ensure the children have a high level of health and welfare.

The Rotary Club of Patong Beach this week donated B370,000 worth of monitoring equipment and a defibrillator for use in an ambulance at Patong Hospital. The ambulance was originally donated by the Club, along with the Doctors Association of Zurich and the Rotary Club Uetliberg, Switzerland after the Tsunami 11 years ago, but has lacked this necessary equipment. RCoPB President Walter Wyler and Doctors Association of Zurich representative Dr Peter Tschudi handed over the equipment to Patong Hospital’s Director, Dr Sirichai Silparcha and staff on Monday, 7 March, 2016. Dr Sirichai said the equipment would add great value to the hospital’s ability to treat patients quickly. Mr Wyler said RCoPB saw donating the funds for the equipment as an ongoing commitment toward the Phuket community in the medical area.

The world is 99 percent polio-free. India is no longer polio-endemic. We are closer than ever to ending the crippling disease for good, yet we are in emergency mode. We don’t have the funding to finish the job. That’s why we need you to use your network of contacts to help stop this disease. Advocacy is not the job of a small group of senior rotary leaders – it’s up to everyone to make sure polio stays on the global agenda. Write to your government officials. Use your social network to spread the word. Provide a link to www.endpolionow.org in your email signature. Host a fundraising dinner to help fill the US$700 million funding gap that holds us back. More tools, such as letter templates and graphics, are available at www.endpolionow.org. Together, we will cross the finish line and leave a legacy of a polio-free world.
